Rainy Days and Mondays

Here I am, reporting live from my ocean view bed at Le Blanc Spa resort in Cancun Mexico. For some reason vacations have me early to bed and early to rise. At home I’m more than content to stay up to the wee hours and sleep til at least 10. Here seems to be the opposite. I’d like to think it’s because I enjoy being out and in the sun that much.

Today marks day 2 of rain. Yesterday I went shopping to escape the rain. I had high hopes of buying a Louis bag but the prices here are so inflated it’s crazy. Ditto to a white strapped watch with crystals around the face. I tried to buy new Havaiana flip flops and they were out of my size. Needless to say it was a fruitless trip but a good way to pass the time.

I’m happy to report my wet feet have not slipped on the marble floors, and I have not given any additional money to Palace Resorts. In fact, I’ve never left a member update meeting so angry in my life. I may just be a medic and not overly business savvy but there are a few things I know and have learned about negotiations along the way….

1) It’s generally helpful if the vendor knows your contract as well as you do so they aren’t trying to resell you the same things over again.
2) It’s also helpful that if I tell you I have something in my contract, when it’s clear I know it better than you, don’t tell me no I don’t.
3) Pressure sales tactics don’t work on someone who has already bought in to your company.
4) If you promise to make something right, make sure you follow through with your promise whether I invest more or not.
5) Mr. Salesman… EVERYTHING is negotiable if you want the sale bad enough and you enter into the negotiations with a clear intent to make a deal; realizing both parties will need to compromise to complete the transaction.
6) Removing currently enjoyed benefits and replacing them with worthless ones will not get a deal done, unless you’re dealing with a sucker.
7) Knowing your client and understanding their why will get you very very far. At this point the art of the sale is not about you, but about tapping in to your clients needs and satisfying said need. Chances are, if I need a coffee maker but you’d rather sell me an oven, a deal will never be reached.

The storms here have been crazy. I’ve never seen the ocean so rough. We had a huge water leak through the night in our room. I hesitated to tell our butler in fear we’d be moved to a crappier room but there really is a huge puddle in the living area. Someone drowned in the rough waters on Saturday night at the resort next door. To be fair, red flags were flying everywhere along the beach, so it was an unfortunate result of his misadventures. Cue the media uproar.

I’m going to spend my afternoon in the spa and hope for sunny days ahead!

Up In The Air

I have to say, blogging from 35,000 feet in the air is a new experience for me. I hesitated on posting about our travels while away but figured I’d go with it. After all, my house is under guard by an attack mother in law. It may or may not be true, but that’s not something I’d willingly risk finding out. I also have two gluttonous bosses who would viciously demand feeding, so unless you want to slave to them too I’d really recommend avoiding my house altogether.

I’m currently en route to what I affectionately know as my second home, Le Blanc Spa resort in Cancun Mexico. I know that while I’m there I will have every single whim catered to and I will be completely spoiled in every single way. It’s a very special place that I feel no words could ever give it proper justice. It has an amazing serene vibe, there is amazing aromatherapy scents accompanied by soft relaxing music throughout the building, and everything is so comfortable classy and not stuffy at all. This is my 4th trip there and there are times where I find it hard to imagine vacationing anywhere else. I will be pad blogging on the fly so feel free to live vicariously through me.

A hot topic lately seems to be the question of the safety of traveling to Mexico. Well, most of the violence is in the border towns, not the resort towns. Some tourist areas have their issues, but I keep up with the goings on well enough to know which ones to avoid, ie. Acapulco. I’d also like to consider myself a pretty savvy traveler and I’m mindful to not let my guard down and I don’t take risks abroad that I wouldn’t take at home. There are parts of Toronto you just don’t go to alone in the dead of night. The same applies to any other city I visit. If it looks remotely sketchy or unsafe, don’t go there. Have tourists been killed, yes. But there are thousands more that safely travel back and forth. That’s pretty good odds if you ask me. Also, there is often a back story to the killings that the media tends to gloss over because that makes for less sensational journalism. Me, my biggest risk is another mishap involving wet feet and a marble floor or in the heat of the moment agreeing to upgrade my membership even further with Palace Resorts.

As for getting there this has to be one of the best flights I’ve taken in a long time. Much kudos to Delta for on time, good service, comfortable seats and honoring the ticket I booked. Breakfast was simple and not anything to write home about, but so far Air Canada has set a pretty high standard that I’m not sure anything could compare. Last year on a brief trip to Chicago to run the Soldier Field 10 mile run, my Air Canada breakfast was a delightful Belgian waffle with warm apple compote and sausage and a soft warm cinnamon bun on the side. My last trip I traveled with Continental and it wax marred with mishaps that cost Continental/United me as a customer for life. So in my final act of screw you to Continental, when I got home from my last vacation I promptly booked my next flights with Delta – not even within the Star Alliance. That story is best saved for another time…

As for now – let the good times roll and Viva Mexico! YES MORE TEQUILA!!

Tales From The Crazy Train

All aboard! I’m going off the rails on a crazy train!

So, after starting the blog, I wrapped up a busy week at work and got right into running lots of errands. Fun stuff. For me stuff. Get me out of the house and distract me appropriately kind of stuff. I was running on little sleep and admittedly was stressed and grumpy. Clearly not the best of conditions to blog under. I’d have everyone thinking I was some spoiled emo brat grumpasaurus which is not my norm. I’d like to think I keep to my own and live a relatively peaceful life. I digress….

Last night I was leaving my last errand of picking up a still under warranty cable for my MacBook when I got some amazing news. The arbitrator has awarded us a contract. We had been working for over 2 years without one so it was good to see it finally come to an end. For the record, I will seldom, if ever post about work. I have a mortgage I need to pay and I won’t jeopardize my job by posting things on the intarwebs about it. This makes twice that our contract has been awarded while I was off on vacation. I’ll call it an omen that I need to vacation a lot whenever we enter into contract negotiations – for the benefit of my co-workers of course. End of work discussion! I’m on vacation.

Today I have been out doing all sorts of fun errands with extra gusto! I’m currently relaxing in the chair at the hairdressers. I’ll be off from here to a mani/pedi. I’m such a girlie girl and can’t help it. I love to be spoiled. And now instead of looking like the spoiled emo brat grumpasaurus I probably look like a wee bit of a diva princess. I guess there’s worse things to be. Let the vacation times roll on…

Hi Honey! I’m Home!

Hello and welcome to my brand spankin’ new home on the web. Thank you so much for stopping by!

I can’t begin to tell you how many blogs I’ve started and posted to over the years. I really only had one that stuck, but it just no longer suits me. So – I’m going to give this one a good year of effort and see how things go. I have a fantastico app that will make it super easy to me to post from my iPad on the fly and I’m looking forward to sharing snippets of me. Just having the app very much fixes the effort part because I definitely have a tendency to be a chatterbox and highly opinionated – a quick look to my twitter page is a bit of an indicator of that.

I will admit this is a bit of a leap of faith for me because sometimes I’ve felt more comfortable sharing bizarre random snippets of me with total strangers instead of friends and family. So I’m going to attempt to be a bit more open here all in the name of this is me, take it or leave it. ¬†Something went around on twitter a few months back, and I’m paraphrasing here, but it said that my plan for dealing with a zombie invasion was better than dealing with a family member finding my twitter account. ¬†In my case that was 100% true. Maybe now I can be prepared for both?

I can’t promise I’ll be entertaining nor consistent. I do promise that I will be quintessentially me.

As for the title, it’s simple, either of those two things can instantly brighten my day.
